LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Totland
Crocker Art Museum
Sacramento, CA

Totland was a small grant-funded project specific to 0-5 year olds, with only 6 weeks to design and get it constructed and installed! The Crocker Art Museum had expanded, so to make it friendlier to families with small children, the museum created a story book to lead families through the museum, on a treasure hunt looking for birds in paintings. The culmination space was to incorporate a hands-on art-making space, a reference area, and an interactive media activity – where children can make art by touching a large screen. Since the story emphasized birds, which usually reside in trees, this created the idea for the space. The tree canopy brings the height of the space down, doesn’t interfere with the A/C, lights and fire-sprinklers, and creates intimate spaces.
